CONNECTICUT

David Collins

Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling

  • Interviewed by WTIC AM out of Hartford
  • Produced several television and radio public service announcements, with a particular focus on sports betting and the impact that problem gambling has on families
  • Mailings: Youth and Family agencies, Senior Services, & Spiritual community (distributed- 950 organizations in total received the mailing).
  • Media Blast:  Press Release to announce PG Awareness Week (Sent on March 4th)
  • PSA’s/Interviews – select  college radio stations and select public radio stations
  • College stations: 4 state universities and Sacred Heart University
    • Radio stations statewide contacted and sent scripts and audio PSA’s.
    • New contract “Month of March” 92.5 FM (country station): 36 PSA's will run for the month – one during morning commute, one during evening commute M-F; Banner on their web page with link to our website, as well as PSA’s running between 10am-3pm, for those who listen to the station online.
  • Contact with the 4 Connecticut based TV Stations to run our video PSA’s during NPGAW – None have yet confirmed dates/times of showings. 
  • Southern CT State University– under mini-grant will be doing various prevention activities with students: 
    • Ice Cream Social :  March 10th, 11am (awareness kits)
    • Volleyball tournament “Sweat it-Don’t Bet it”:  March 10th, 7pm  Water/Gatorade and T-shirts provided.

    • Guest Speaker (12:20-2:00pm.) Thursday March 13th, for faculty and staff of all CSUs and extended invitations to all colleges in CT through the Statewide Healthy Campuses Initiative:  Jim Wuelfing, Mass. Council on PG.  Lunch sandwiches etc. provided.
    • Activities to be advertised by Southern’s Newspaper and WSIN, college radio station.
  • Financial Well-Being: Youth Prevention Workshop at CONN College (for teens). Gambling prevention information will be distributed as part of the workshop
  • Movie theatre awareness campaign :  Bridgeport, Danbury, Plainville, Groton, Mansfield, Middletown, Southington (To begin March 28th for 16 weeks)
  • Regional Action Councils in collaboration with CCPG (H.Ed.G.E. Collaborative) will be providing local and regional gambling prevention activities during NPGAW
  • New England News Forum:  March 11th, 2008 :
    • Event:  “The Big Gamble: The Costs, Benefits and Coverage of Casinos.” -  Assess the impact and reporting of casino gambling on New England - - the experience in CT and the promise in MA.

Foxwoods Resort Casino

  • In partnership with the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling, will distribute a 30-minute docudrama called ''21'' to public and university libraries in Connecticut
  • A pamphlet created by the Connecticut Women's Problem Gambling Project, a program of the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, will be made available throughout Foxwoods, directing patrons to outlets where treatment is available
  • Airing new public service announcements on the subject throughout the property
  • Sending electronic notices to employees to further educate them on the subject

FLORIDA

Florida Parishes Human Services Authority Addictive Disorders Services

  • Will bring back brings back the group Big Daddy 'O' to perform at the 2nd Annual Gambling Awareness event held in St. Tammany Parish
  • Covington mayor Candace Watkins and Mandeville mayor Eddie Price have both issued gambling week proclamations as has St. Tammany parish president Kevin Davis.
ILLINOIS

Chestnut Health Systems

  • Chestnut Health Systems will man booths at the Alton Belle and Casino Queen facilities located in Southern Illinois, where they will be promoting NPGAW
    Notified 7 of our local senators and legislators about NPGAW and offered information to them and their constituency;
  • Sent NPGAW notice and information to the Congregation of Metro-East Churches consisting of coalition of over 25 area churches and offered public speakers;
  • Sent information regarding NPGAW to Illinois Church Action on Alcohol and Addiction Problems who have a state wide membership;
  • Sent NPGAW information to counselors belonging to an area counseling association; Sent CHS created NPGAW posters to Mental Health Centers and hospitals in a wide geographical area; 
  • Issued a news release multiple news papers in the southwestern part of Illinois;
  • Had a NPGAW booth at area prevention conference;
  • Sent NPGAW information and posters to selected organizations involved with senior citizens;
  • Sent NPGAW information through Chestnut EAP services to the companies HR department throughout the country that CHS serves. 
  • Scheduled display booths at two local junior colleges outside of NPGAW on the 18th and 19th due to spring break.

llinois Council on Problem Gambling,

  • Aired two cable television hotline call-in programs addressing problem gambling issues. Topics included problem gambling among seniors, teens, and college students.  Also topics discussed were self-exclusion, promoting NPGAW, March Madness and where to get help. 
  • Public service announcements running;
  • Sent NPGAW information and material to over 100 service providing agencies and organizations, city, state, and federal officials and legislators.

Renz Addiction Counseling Center

 Kansas Coalition on Problem Gambling

KENTUCKY

Kentucky Council on Problem Gambling

  • The Kentucky Division for Mental Health and Substance Abuse (DMHS) will survey the 14 Comprehensive Mental Health Centers (CMHCs) to determine their level of expertise, and how they manage action regarding pathological gambling. Copies of the American Compulsive Gambling Counselor Certification Board certification guidelines will be distributed with the survey to encourage CMHC staff to become certified gambler counselors
  • DMHSA created an industry survey, which KYCPG will distribute to determine whether responsible gaming and awareness programs are in place at venues, and what happens if a person is identified with a potential problem. Where are they referred
  • DMHSA will distribute to the CMHC network NPGAW awareness material that will be adapted to Kentucky from the NPGAW website. All items on the site are free to use and amend without copyright restrictions
  • Draft a media advisory and ask it to be broadcast faxed by the Kentucky Lottery
  • A presentation on Gambling in Kentucky will be offered on Monday, March 10, to all DMHSA central office staff by RonSonLyn Clark, Ph.D., CCGC, and Scott Walker, CCGC, each of whom is a CMHC Director of Substance Abuse Services

LOUISIANA

Louisiana Association on Compulsive Gambling

  • News conference to receive a proclamation from Gov. Bobby Jindal proclaiming this week as National Problem Gambling Awareness Week in Louisiana

MARYLAND

Maryland Council on Problem Gambling

  • Maryland Council with our partners in the Maryland Coalition on Problem Gambling, (University of Maryland, Medical School, Department of Psychiatry, Loyola College, Pastoral Counseling Program, Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Silvia Martens) are distributing to our colleagues in the Maryland Chapter of the NCADD all our information from the NPGAW web page to the addiction treatment member agencies.
  • We have a Proclamation from the Mayor of Baltimore in the works, the City Council has passed the Resolution declaring Problem Gambling Awareness Week.
  • Ken Winters PhD has agreed to speak on adolescents, gambling and addictions at the Tuerk Conference our state’s largest addiction conference and we are hoping the Lottery will help sponsor the event. 
  • Printed literature- posters etc. are also being distributed to treatment agencies statewide as well as to the University of Md. System.
  • PSA’s have also been submitted to several media networks and we are hopeful they will get some airtime. 
  • An ad is also being purchased for a local paper with one of the MIPH posters and the national helpline number.
  • Materials have been submitted to local libraries with hopes they will post our materials and we have donated some of the Brubaker DVD’s to the lending library system so they have something on problem gambling in their files.
